01 / The Challenge

A daily newsroom outgrowing a browser tab

Azad Sandesh runs a Gujarati news desk covering Rajkot and the wider Saurashtra Kutch region alongside state, national and international stories, sport, business and entertainment. That coverage already lived on a website and in a printed daily edition, but readers checking the news from their phone on patchy mobile data needed something faster and lighter than a full web page reload, with the day's print edition and live cricket scores sitting next to the headlines rather than scattered across separate pages.

Breaking news on politics, business and cricket needed a channel faster than reloading a mobile web page on patchy data

The printed daily edition only existed as print or a generic web page, with no reader friendly way to browse it exactly as published

A single national feed made it hard for a Rajkot or Saurashtra Kutch reader to find the stories closest to home

Live cricket scores, weather and the day's headlines lived in separate places instead of one screen

One fixed light theme did not suit a reader checking the news at night as well as during the day

02 / Here is What We Did

One Flutter app, light enough for everyday mobile data

We built the Azad Sandesh News app in Flutter for Android, backed by the same news desk that runs azadsandesh.com, so a story published on the website reaches the app without a separate workflow. The app was scoped around the parts of the reading habit a website could not serve well on a phone: instant breaking news, a searchable archive, and the daily edition rendered as a proper e-paper rather than a reflowed article.

Dark, light and system theming were treated as a core reading feature, not a settings afterthought, since a regional daily is read at every hour.

STEP 01

Home, Categories & Breaking News

Built a home feed with a breaking news band and a category rail spanning Politics, Business, Cricket, Sports, Food, Entertainment, Opinions, Bollywood and Health, so a reader reaches their usual section in one tap.

STEP 02

Search, Weather & Cricket

Added full text search across the news archive, current weather for the reader's city, and live cricket scorecards surfaced alongside the day's top stories.

STEP 03

E-paper & Reading Modes

Shipped an e-paper reader that presents the printed daily edition page by page as published, plus dark, light and system theme switching for comfortable reading at any hour.

Breaking news band and a category rail covering Politics, Business, Cricket, Sports, Food, Entertainment, Opinions, Bollywood and Health.

02

Live cricket scorecards surfaced next to the day's headlines rather than in a separate section.

03

Current weather for the reader's own city, shown right on the home screen.

04

06

Dark, light and system theme switching for reading comfortably morning or night.

07

A companion website at azadsandesh.com carrying the same coverage of Rajkot, Saurashtra Kutch, Gujarat, national and international news.
