01The challenge
A regulated practice suite that had to work away from the desk
The work a law firm bills for happens in courtrooms and client meetings. The brief was the same regulated workflows, rebuilt for a phone.
Billable time is revenue
The timer had to survive backgrounding, app kills and lost signal without losing or double counting minutes.
Mixed roles in one firm
Partners, associates, auditors and approving managers each needed the app reshaped around them.
A five stage approval chain
Request, review, approval, disbursement and retirement had to be represented faithfully, not simplified.
Client confidential material
Documents and messages needed controlled participants and server issued download links.
More than one currency
Firms bill across currencies and read the app in different languages, so nothing could be hard coded to one locale.
02What we built
One GetX codebase, every module, one permission model
A controller and view per feature keeps routing, injection and state predictable. Every screen talks to one Dio backed service layer.
Foundations and practice core
Auth, the home dashboard, billable time with a server synced timer, progress notes, court updates and documents.
Clients, billing and conflict checks
Client records, matters, expenses, full invoicing with tax and discounts, and a conflict check producing a filed PDF.
Expenses and secure messaging
The five stage expense workflow with fund release and retirement, then client messaging with participant control.
Permissions are fetched from the server at session start and enforced in 51 files, so a role reshapes the app rather than hiding a button.
03In the app
One dashboard, every matter
Each module reads and writes the same records the office is working from.
A lawyer opens on the day's summary, starts a timer against a matter, and moves into whichever module the work needs. The office sees it immediately.
01Server synced timer
Starts, pauses and stops against the server with a 60 second background sync, so no billable minute is lost.
02Clients and matters
Individual and company clients, legal teams, relationship managers, matter rates and status.
03Full invoicing
Time, expenses and flat fees on one invoice, per line tax and discounts, themes, signature and an approval flow.
04Expense approval chain
Request, review, approval, disbursement and retirement, with dedicated auditor and disburser views.
05Conflict checks
Run against both sides, producing a downloadable PDF that files straight onto the matter it clears.
06Secure client messaging
Controlled participants, shared file listings and server issued attachment links, inside the firm's own system.
07Document management
Type classification, device upload, background downloads and matter level filing, with court updates and notes.
08Multi currency and locale
Live exchange rate conversion, four translated interface languages, and dark mode across every screen.
04The instance
DigitsLaw, as it ships
Two screens from the app: court updates, then sign in.
Court update details and other information sit under their own tabs, filtered and sorted from a search bar, with a floating action button to log a new update against the matter.
Sign in is a plain email and password screen carrying the DigitsLaw mark, with sign up and password recovery one tap away.
